What's included — and the difference between trimming and pruning

People use the words interchangeably, but they're different jobs. Trimming is about your property: clearing branches away from the roof, siding, driveway, and sightlines, and shaping the tree so it fits its space. Pruning is about the tree: removing dead, diseased, rubbing, or structurally weak limbs so the canopy grows strong and storm-resistant. Most visits include both — and every Diversified trim job includes haul-away of every branch we cut.

We prune to arboricultural standards: correct cuts outside the branch collar, no topping, no lion-tailing, and never more than the canopy can afford to lose in one season. Bad pruning is slow-motion tree removal — we see franchise-crew topping jobs fail across Grand Rapids every year, and we don't do it.

Our process

01
Walkthrough & goals

We look at every tree with you — what’s bothering you, what’s at risk, and what the tree actually needs.

02
Written scope

Exactly which limbs come off and why, with a fixed price. No “while we’re up there” surprises.

03
Climb & cut

Climbers make correct cuts with clean, sharp equipment — rigged and lowered where drops could cause damage.

04
Complete cleanup

Branches chipped and hauled, lawn raked, driveway blown clean before we pull away.

What to expect

Most residential trims finish in a half day. You don't need to be home — but if you are, the crew lead will walk the finished work with you. Expect the canopy to look lighter and more balanced, not butchered: good pruning is mostly invisible from the curb. For young trees, structural pruning every 3–5 years is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy against a five-figure removal later.

A professional prune in Grand Rapids typically runs about $450, with most jobs falling between $375 and $525 per tree depending on size, condition, and access. Multi-tree visits price lower per tree — the crew and equipment are already on site.

Trimming & pruning FAQs

When is the best time to prune in Michigan?

Late winter (February–March) for most species — trees are dormant, structure is visible, and disease pressure is low. Oaks should only be pruned in dormancy to avoid oak wilt. Dead or hazardous limbs come off any time of year.

How much can you take off at once?

As a rule, no more than 25% of the live canopy in a season — and usually much less. If a tree needs more than that, we’ll stage the work across seasons or talk honestly about whether removal is the better investment.

Will you top my tree?

No. Topping creates weakly-attached regrowth that fails in storms and shortens the tree’s life. We’ll reduce height the right way — with proper reduction cuts to strong lateral limbs.

Do you clean up the branches?

Always. Chipping and haul-away are included in every quote — your yard is raked clean before we leave.
